Weather at The Old Schoolhouse. Pan and zoom for your location.

Home at The Old Schoolhouse, Swalwell, Alberta

I woke up at 4:45, having slept almost 8 hours and having slept well.

My mouth was very dry though for the second time lately.  Research suggests that I was mouth breathing and suggest apnea but I am well-rested. I guess we'll see if it repeats.  I drank Diet Coke again last evening and come to think of it that might be the key.

There is no doubt that not drinking beer allows better sleep.  Weight is 226.0 BG is 6.7. BP is 125/84 Pulse 54.

BP changes over the day. At 7 it is now 118/70 with pulse at 59.  That is after a big breakfast of steak and eggs and coffee.

I'll get back to those files and then the furnace today.  Maybe even the alternator problem in the Merc although I suspect it is just a bad battery. I put the tester on it and it seems intermittent.

The morning flew by.  I did some odds and ends, called Mom about her tablet arriving, and booked two appointments for covid test in Calgary for Friday morning.

For the first time today I put on my long underwear seeing as I am going to be outside and the temperatures are near freezing.  A good underlayer makes a huge difference here in cold country.

I changed the battery on the car, vacuumed in the gym and tried out the diesel heater. BY the time I finished, I was too warm for the longjohns.

At four, I drove to Three Hills to pick up a prescription and bought six beers.  Then I drove to Drum, going east on 27 and down through Orkney.  By then it was dark.

In Drum I went to Walmart first looking for a car battery.  I decided I need to measure the existing battery since battery height varies as well as the terminal placement.  I had assumed a 24F was the right one but the terminals are wrong and I have a 24C in now, I think.

The I went to No Frills still hunting a turkey and then the Friesens' where I found a turkey and from there drove home.

Weather at The Old Schoolhouse. Pan and zoom for your location.

Home at The Old Schoolhouse, Swalwell, Alberta

I woke up at six and got up, had breakfast and did some reading then went back to bed and slept until eight.  It is nice to have daylight in the mornings.

I had slept badly due to beer drinking last night. Around midnight my SpO2 had been around 90 so I tried APAP and that improved it to 92.  After a while I decided to stop worrying about it and took it off and slept.

BP is 115/70 64. BG is 6.2 and weight 225.2 lbs.

Some time back my mother gave an envelope as mentioned here earlier with letters from camp, et.

Included was this old Advisor front page from the year 1975.  At one time I was contacted often by the media including television crews.  Nothing lately, though.  There is a school picture, too. What's with the smirk?

I have been sluggish today and done very little but read and write. There are things that need doing but I am uninspired.  I leave for Mexico Sunday and get some tests tomorrow and have a supper tomorrow night.  What has me undecided is how long I will be gone and what I need to do before then.

I am thawing the turkey now so I can cook it in the time between when I get home and when folks arrive.  My last appointment is at 11:50 in NE Calgary so I should be home an hour later at one.  That gives me five hours until six. That should be lots for the 15-lb bird.

The big deciding factor is how crazy governments will get between now and my return.  Normally I would come and go a time or two but that my be difficult.

I have set up backup heat and power but wonder should I clean the grate on the furnace or let it be?  Should I pull the gearbox apart to check for wear or let it bee.  That is two or three hours work and may be unnecessary but who knows?  It is working well.

It's five-thirty now and the sun has just gone down.  I had bought blade steak yesterday and tonight I barbecued a piece for an early supper.

After that I went out and moved more drums into the basement and then took out two of the three drums of ashes I've accumulated in the three months since I arrived home August 16th to today.  I should have gone out earlier.  I had delayed because I was feeling tired not very energetic but found once i got out I was more inspired.

"Economic destruction and shifting wealth upward

"During the COVID pandemic, Dr. Fauci served as ringmaster in the engineered demolition of America’s economy. His lockdown predictably shattered the nation’s once-booming economic engine, putting 58 million Americans out of work, and permanently bankrupting small businesses, including 41 percent of Black-owned businesses, some of which took generations of investment to build.

"The business closures contributed to a run-up in the national deficit — the interest payments alone will cost almost $1 trillion annually. That ruinous debt will likely permanently bankrupt the New Deal programs — the social safety net that, since 1945, fortified, nurtured and sustained America’s envied middle-class.

"Government officials have already begun liquidating the almost 100-year legacies of the New Deal, New Frontier, the Great Society and Obamacare to pay the accumulated lockdown debts. Will we find ourselves saying goodbye to school lunches, healthcare, WIC, Medicaid, Medicare, university scholarships and other long-standing assistance programs?

I woke up at 5:22 and got up.  Weight is 222.8 BG is 8.2! (I took it twice).  BP is 129/82 and pulse is 62.

I have to be in Calgary this morning for blood tests, then home to get the supper ready.

I drove to the city and found the place ten minutes early for my 9:40. I asked if they would combine my two appointments and they said, sure, so I was done and on the road headed north by ten.

I stopped at Costco to return the jeans I bought the other day.

They said size 42 but must be bee 45 inches around.  I learned earlier that some companies undersize the labels so the men who buy them won't be insulted and can kid themselves as to how "thin" they are.

I looked to see if they had a Group 65 battery and they did so I bought one and installed it in the Merc. The one I am using is an old one and I figure that with winter coming, there is no sense in taking chances on starting.  I don't drive the Merc in winter, but just the same...

I was impressed.  The Costco price was $40 cheaper than elsewhere and the warrantee is great.  The core charge was $10, half of what others charge and when i took it in there was such a line-up at returns I decided to just return it some other time.

I was home at 11:50 two hours earlier than if the appointments had not been combined and took out the turkey.  I had thawed it, but it was still frozen inside so getting the giblets out was a bit of work.  Not only that, but between the bag and the inside, they must have sold me a pound of ice.

I decided to cook  it in the countertop cooker instead of the oven so it won't be crispy, but it will be good..  With plenty of time, I am peeling potatoes and getting ready.  At 1:45, I am halfway ready.

Folks arrived at five and some later.  I botched the turkey,  The countertop cooker was slow so I put the bird in the main oven and overcooked it.  Nobody seemed to mind.  We had a good party and by nine the dishwasher was loaded and I went to bed.

I slept poorly due to eating too much and drinking beer.  I was up at two, putting away dishes and finishing cleanup, then back to bed and up at seven. Weight 226.  BG 8.2!

I have today to finish preparations for leaving.

I did a few things but have been at loose ends all day.  I moved some things outside and looked at my wetsuits and found two that I bought but never used could work well in La Paz so I am packing them.

MLE came over and we reviewed the procedures.

I went downstairs to look at the furnace and first checked the chimney.  There is along horizontal run where soot deposits over time to where it gets blocked and sure enough it was getting to that point.o, I got the shop vac and went to work.

I worked on it until it seemed late and when i went upstairs it was only 5:20.  There is lots of day left.

I went back down and worked until 8:45, went up, set the alarm and went to bed.

I have not seen much reason to doubt about the spike and it's attachment method and entry to the body.

I think that the virus is reasonably well understood by people in that virology and vaccine specialists and I do not see any real disagreement about the spike except for the people who say there is no virus but none that say that seem credible or qualified, to me at least.

What is pointed out by those who seem to know is that the spike is just one aspect of the infection and has to do with how it invades the body through the respiratory system. The secondary behaviours are still being discovered.

AFAIK, other avenues of infection by the virus, other than direct injection into the body, have been disproven. Apparently touching things is not infectious. It must be inhaled or otherwise enter the respiratory system and it is very good at that because it forms aerosols which travel long distances and hang in the air like dust, and don't just drop the floor like droplets. That is why masks are pointless.

As with anything it takes more than one virion to infect, and the number required to overpower defenses depends on the individual, so the closer and longer one is enclosed with a source and the weaker one's immune system, the greater the risk. Conversely, the farther away one is from the source and the shorter the time spend in that cloud, the lower the concentration will be and the less likely infection.

Interestingly, we can assume that slight repeated exposures over time should build immunity and we se that in the healthcare workers who have been exposed since the beginning and never showed illness.

I don't know if ingestion is typically infectious. Apparently not to any significant degree.

Other viruses have other methods of attaching to and entering cells but I know little about them

My alarms woke me from a deep sleep at 3.   Normally I wake before the alrm but not today and I was groggy, stunned.  I got up, set up the coffee and turned up the heat, snoozed the alarm and went back under the covers.

Twenty minutes later I got up and began the day. I weigh 224.4.  My BG thingy is packed.

My cold sore has not completely healed, even after days so I took ivermectin last night hoping its antiviral effect might suppress the sore and also in preparation for the flight. The sore has not changed overnight.  I suppose stress has an effect.  I thought I had more IVM, but this uses up my supply until I get to la Paz.

I board at 9:10 and should be at YYC by 8. Cut-off for checked bags is 8:40.  That means leaving here at 6:30. With any luck I'll be on Baja Magic by sundown.

Hi Alan

>Apparently touching things is not infectious.

Err, no. I got it the 1st time from a pbp (pinebookpro), assembled Shenzen Xmas'19. 2 weeks via dhl, a week later I had wuhan flu.

99% sure it was, from the symptoms that were typical (except for loss of smell). And it has given me OAS, too trained on this version, but I have horse paste, which works well.

The reason I am still alive is vitamin D, due to (every) night foot cramps I had been taking ca (or ca/mg) + D (1000iu), 5/day for 2-3 years previous, stopped the cramps.

Lucky I guess

Dave

Although I agree with this statement, I have to question anyone saying "Biggest in history".  Anyone saying that does not know history.

It is 4AM and I am finally (almost) awake.  I have yet to have breakfast and finish packing.

The rtrip to the airport and the flight were typical.  On arrival, instead of joining the throng of tourists in long lines snaking across the room, I walked to the "Mexicans" line and only one couple was ahead of me.

The agent stamped my documents and I went out into the heat and sun to wait for my Ecobaja shuttle scheduled for 1630,two hours later.  I went to my usual patio bar and had a couple of cervezas at the tourist price of 120 pesos.  85 peasos buys six at the minisuper near my marina.

I crossed to the Ecobaja meeting point at 4:30. By then I had met Scott who also has a boat in La Paz and said his ticket says 5:30.  We shared another beer and soon the driver appeared and sure enough we were going at 5:30.

We were to only pax besides a young world traveler as far a Todo Santos where he got off and two Mexicans on their way to a cockfight in La Paz got on.

Marco dropped Scot and me at Marina de La Paz.  Scot went for supper.  I went to my boat

Baja Magic was just as I left her and not too dirty.  The dodger and bimini were stripped off though.  Hector has them.

I went below, sat down, then made coffee.  I had been thinking of going to Chedraui but the coffee made me sleepy and I was in bed by nine.

Tied up at the dock at Marina de La Paz

I slept well and got up at six. The morning is comfortably warm at 20C.  I made coffee. I did not weigh or check vitals since things are still packed away.

The coffee has been sitting on the counter for three months and is a bit stale, but good enough.  All I have to eat is macaroni, so macaroni it was.  I found the follow-up ivermectin dose and took it in case I contacted something in my travels. Now I need to get more.

Rumour is that IVM is now prescription.  We'll see. May depend on what pharmacy.  Information is not evenly distributed.

I started finding places for a the 'stuff' and putting things back together.  This boat does not have a lot of cupboards.

Richard dropped by and we chatted and then went up to coffee at the clubhouse.   Cristy gave me a big hug and the others drifted by to say, "Hi". Already I am enlisted for the boat parade on Dec 18th and Cristy is buying the lights. It looks as if the group is going snorkelling Wednesday and guess what, I said I'll got to yoga in the morning.   Cristy is the leader.

I launched the dinghy and it seems about unchanged. I have no gas so a trip to the gas station is in the cards if I want to go swimming at the Magote later today. I have to go shopping though so maybe later.

Things have loosened up a lot here and I see folks without masks although we all pretend a bit and put masks on when it seems appropriate.  Coffee was suspended for a year almost but now is on six days a week at 0930 and well-attended.

I went to Chedruai by DiDi this afternoon.  People there are wearing masks in the store but my first driver did not care to wear a mask.  My return driver said "Si" when I asked, "tengo que usarlo?" showing my crumpled mask and he wore his so I wore mine.

It is Buen Fin and there are deals in the stores.

I was going to buy IVM and put money on my Amazon card because I am not sure my bank card worked on an order I made today but I bought groceries and decided to go straight home.  I'll go for a walk later.

Frankly, I am burned out and it is so good to just be here where people are nice regardless and the government has a light touch-- and keeping cool is the problem not keeping from freezing to death or at least worrying about pipes freezing.

Of course my friends here are folks from all over who have circled the globe and lived a full life.  There are a few jerks, but so far I have been spared their presence.

When I think of it, my best friends at home are similar that way. To a great extent Ellen chose my friends for me.  She recognised quality and would not tolerate hanging with any but the best folks.  She blew off the posers in a New York minute.

I had supper and made a stew, watched some video and went to bed early.

I slept well and got up at five and did some Spanish and the dishes, then slept another hour and got up again at seven.

After the net, Nelson and I raised the genoa.  I skipped the yoga since I have a full day to get ready to go snorkeling tomorrow.

I dropped the outboard onto the dinghy and it started first pull.  That never happened before!

Then I washed Baja Magic and filled the water tanks. I overfilled both of them. Dumb!

I'm waiting for my facilitator, Luis, who should be here shortly and then in the evening Hector returns with my bimini and dodger so I am killing time.

Hector called mid-afternoon and said the power transformer blew up in his neighbourhood and he could not finish the sewing, so... Mañana.

Luis delayed a few times and finally showed up at six. I signed forms and paid him and that was it.

I watched some video and went to bed early.

I got up at four and caught up the diary then ran CCleaner.  Ccleaner unexpectedly rebooted my computer and I lost the morning's work seeing as I had not saved it.

I was waiting to hear from Luis to get my passport back so we could go  to the bank but he was at Immigration with his phone off.  Eventually I hard from him and he came to picked up at one.  We drove to the bank and I paid him the immigration fee he had paid for me.

I returned to Baja Magic and took a trip across the bay to swim at The Magote then returned.  I was dog-tired and slept until six.

After supper I did my minimum daily Duolingo, watched some video and went to bed early again.

Weather at The Old Schoolhouse. Pan and zoom for your location.

Tied up at the dock at Marina de La Paz

I slept very well and got up at five.

I sleep better at sea level and maybe the relief of getting my permanent visa has relieved my tension.  Also seeing people congregate freely without masks or fear is hugely relaxing.

Weight is 226.5 and BG 6.5.

Today Danny brings my bimini back.  I thought that Hector had it but it turns out Danny did some work on it.  He had been paid but several little things needed doing so he took it away for the winter.

Also I am hoping to go to immigration for fingerprinting and that will finalise my visa.  Luis has handled the background work which would take me multiple visits to immigration and long waits over, perhaps, weeks. It costs me for his work but is worth it.

I am cooking a package of chicken thighs.

Danny sent my bimini back with a kid who could not stay to put it on so that is my job for the morning. Cristy came by, too, to say she is not going to San Pedro today but we'll go tomorrow. She has a job out there and I just want to walk around.

I spent over an hour installing the bimini.  The job is tricky and requires stretching and pulling and fighting with sticky zippers but I got it done. I need a good zipper lube  Beeswax would be perfect.  It was fun though.  I like a challenge.

Luis texted that we go to immigration tomorrow at ten.  That should complete the process.

Robert Kennedy Jr. put his book, The Real Anthony Fauci, on sale on Kindle so I bought a copy and began reading.

I have not found the fresh water leak even after hunting but it is getting longer and longer between times I hear the pump. I suspect the hot water tank but cannot see and leaks or evidence of water running away from it.

I had not heard from Northwestexplorations (NWE) about Cassiopeia and Corus so I wrote and called. I'm waiting for a return call.  They are terrible at keeping me informed about what is happening.

The divers came and scraped the barnacles off hull. They did it two weeks ago on November the 5th but they grow fast at this time of year.  I had mentioned to Luis (the diver) that I will be using the boat so would be a good time to clean it. Barnacles create a lot of drag and it does not take much to slow the boat by one knot.  The diver spent quite a while so I assume it was pretty bad.

John from NWE finally phoned and wanted a video call so we tried Whatsapp and he did not have Duo. Apparently Whatsapp uses Duo for video, so we tried Skype and my various MS accounts got confused so we tried Zoom but ran out of time.

I read my new Kindle book and had supper then walked to La Costa for darts. After, Nelson and i went to Bandidos for a while and I was home in bed around ten.

Go back a year
Two years.

Tied up at the dock at Marina de La Paz

I slept very well.

At two, though, I got up for a few minutes to see the eclipse. It had begun and since it is along one, watching it would be boring so I went back to bed.

A while later I woke and realised I had misstated my height on my application and hoped it can be corrected.

I think in feet and inches and had made an error when I converted to metric.  I said I am 195 cm which is 6' 4" and I am five ten.  I worried that it might be an issue.

I got up at six and once it was a decent hour I texted my facilitator and she said no problem; it is not too late to change it.

It is only 19°C this AM.  I weigh 226.

I had noticed that they wrote 'catholic' for religion and suppose that is harmless seeing as I am catholic in the real, un-capitalized sense of the word.

Luis is going to pick me up at ten for fingerprinting and that should be the final step to finish the visa process.

Tonight Captain Wayne plays music at Estrella del Mar and we all gather there.  Tomorrow I leave early for Pichilingue to pick up Cristy and Calvin and their kids.   I'll stay out overnight and pick up the others Sunday for more snorkeling.

At ten Luis texted to say I should take a cab to Immigration as he was unable to come.  At eleven I called Didi and arrived at Immigration shortly after.  Luis was in the waiting room and I sat down and waited.  Soon I was called to the counter where I was fingerprinted and photos were taken from front and both sides.

I found that a bit excessive and surprising but I guess that is how it is done and I was done.  I called Cristy, she arrived soon and we went to her sign shop then drove out the highway to San Pedro.

She had to replace one letter on a storefront sign that had blown off in the summer storm.  While she did that I walked around a bit and then we drove back to La Paz.

Entering the city was slow due to the line-up of racers at the end of the Baja 1000, but Cristy dropped me at the marina and I went to the boat.

I had supper and a nap then walked to Estrella.  My friends had a big table but it was in a noisy spot.  They had reserved one on the beach but found they were assigned this one.

I had a coffee and visited a bit and walked home.

My snorkel trip tomorrow is cancelled. Cristy's kids were invited to a party and decided that was their preference.  We will have an adult trip on Sunday, though, as planned.
