Pollen hoarding

Unread post by karen »

I have a hive so full of bees they cover 30 frames. I put another deep on them to give them more frames. Yesterday when I worked them I noticed they are back filling the brood area with pollen. Heritability of the pollen hoarding trait is high. This queens mother didn't produce pollen hoarders so maybe it is the drones the daughter bred to? What ever it is they have around 6 frames packed with pollen right now which I will pull and save for queen rearing. So there is something good to become of pollen hoarding, a source of pollen frames for cell starters.

I have seen more frames of pollen in hives than I can ever remember this season. I don't know if it is a problem sized collection though. It has been a couple weeks since I have been thru the brood boxes.
