Seafaring music

Today I got word that my Great Aunt died ten days after her farmer husband of 70 year. In that time they raised 11 children and untold tons of grain of every kind. While looking for a song by Stan Rogers about farming and the life on a grain farm, 'Fields behind the plow' to help me feel appropriately melancholy, I came accross this sea faring tale that I thought a land locked sailor like you might appreciate.

Peculiar lyrics. I can't figure out how

"I'll never know what we struck that day
But strike we did like thunder "

resulted in

"But no leak I found from bow to hold
No rock it was that got her
But what I saw made my heart stop cold
For every seam poured water "

Did they hit a sleeping whale or suffer a whale attack? A submerged shipping container?

If so why did they not see it?

Beats me.
