     First day of Spring

Today Snow. Amount 10 cm. High plus 1.
Tonight
Snow ending this evening then cloudy with 60 percent chance of flurries. Lo.w minus 5.
Monday
Snow. Amount 5 cm. Wind becoming southeast 20 km/h in the morning. High plus 1.

Spring starts with promises of snow both here in Northern Ontario and in Alberta.

I spent the morning at my sisters, showing her websites on the Internet, then shopped a bit and went hiking with Bill around Lake Ramsey from the Yacht Club to the Canoe Club. We hiked up to the Mining Heritage Monument.  It is quite a piece of bronze.  Click the image to enlarge.

We awoke to an inch of fresh snow in Sudbury and a little more expected, but tomorrow is predicted to be sunny.  In Alberta quite a bit more snow is expected over the next few days.  Skiing should be good, but I will not be there until next month.

I'm sitting in the hospital waiting room.  My Mom is having cataract surgery at the moment and I expect we'll be out of here shortly.

The cataract surgery was over by noon and we returned home.  I ran a few errands in the afternoon.

A load of patties> Hi Allen,
>
> Hope you are doing well and enjoying retirement. in the picture of yours I am just wondering where you bought the trailer or did you make it? I would like to find one like it. I have a bobcat with caster wheel and mast that I use right now until I find a swinger.
>
> Thanks,

We built several of them. They worked wonderfully. Drive off, drive on. One pin to secure the load.  On the highway chains might be needed for appearance in some jurisdictions.

Apiaries and Orchards sells something like them.

The first one we built was just adapted from a standard 5,000 lb flat deck tilt trailer with 1-foot rails, available from most trailer builders. We extended the deck a bit at the back so the forks would not overhang, and to provide less of a climb when backing on. That is a lot easier than building a whole trailer and can be done easily with a farm welder and some custom-cut steel from a local shop. We used an angle iron and tube frame with heavy expanded metal floor for the 2 ft extension/ramp. Expanded metal gives great grip, and lets the mud fall through. Subsequent trailers had the whole floor made from expanded metal with support joists of 2" and 1-1/2" square tube.

I wonder if I have the drawings around somewhere.

Clear, cool weather is predicted here.  In Alberta, it looks like more snow and then weather right around the zero mark.

Mom and I are off to the doctor to have the eye checked this morning.

The appointment went well.  The eye is bit swollen and sore, but coming along well. We went to Tim Horton's and then back to 1207.  I'm a bit bored now that Job One is complete.  I have to wait several days to see if all is well and she can drive again.  That will likely be next Tuesday.  After that, I have to decide what to do.  My boat is still in a snow drift and it is too cool to work on it effectively, even if I got it out.

At this point, I am considering chartering  a boat for ten days again out of Bellingham beginning May 28.  If I do, I need some crew and preferably partners, since it is a big boat to handle alone and people to share the expense would be welcome, too.

I have to plan the family reunion further, and also find out when/if, I am inspecting this year.  There are 10 hives of bees to pick up in BC and I don't know the date yet, so I guess I have things to do.

Bill came over and we hiked around Minnow Lake. That is a 2-mile walk and some of it retraces the 0.8 mile route I covered walking to and from grade school.  Of course, these days, nobody walks even half a mile anymore.  The school buses come right to the end of driveways even down in residential cul de sacs.

I have a workout app on my Galaxy Tab and it tabulates distance and calculates calories burned.  Apparently I burned 303 calories and walked 3.65 km, averaging 4.2 km/hr.  Terrain at left, Galaxy Tab app screen at right.  Click to enlarge.

I carry the Tab everywhere and it sets me free from my netbook.  It also supplies Internet for my netbook when travelling.

Several messages arrived this afternoon while I was out.

Linda dropped over this morning for a visit.  In the afternoon, Bill and I went out to return the reader/tablet and look into adding the Rocket Hub I'm giving him to his account.

Here's a call for bids on the Babe's Honey Assets.  I think I reported the fraud and the arrest?

-We've had two bee related Saanich stories in two days.

After lunch, Bill and I went looking for a used cell phone and I also returned a SDHC card to Costco.  I needed a micro card and this one was full size.  We wandered around Best Buy for a while as well.

In the evening, Mom and I went to the Sudbury Theatre Centre to see, "I had a Job I Liked.  Once".  IT was very well done and cam across well in the small, intimate theatre.  I could not help comparing it to The Lion King, which I saw recently on stage at the cavernous and ornate Procters Theatre in Schenectady -- for almost four time the price.

Bill, Faye and I went up to Lowes and looked at flooring.  Bill and I took a walk, but it is a cold day, so it was not a long one.  Then I went to the shopping centre and bought some more of the $8 jeans I discovered fit me so well and looked again at the Kodoo LG Optimus One smartphone.  It looks like the best deal for me.  No upfront cost, no contract, a $100 gift card to boot, followed by monthly rates as low as $17 and no activation fee.

I drove over to Linda's and visited with Sarah, who is up for the weekend.  I'm hoping to recruit her to help with the family reunion this summer.  Later Bill, Faye and I drove out to Whitefish Falls to test the rocket hub.  It worked just fine.  They bought some flooring in Espanola and we drove home again

Bill and I took a walk in the afternoon, then Mom and I went out for supper.  I had seen a restaurant advertising fish, so that is what we had.  It was quite good.

I've been delinquent in my writing the past few days.  I see the weather has turned, both here in Ontario, and back in Alberta.  I imagine there should be runoff soon at home.

I picked up Bill in late afternoon and went to Wal-Mart, where I bought the LG Optimus One that I have been looking at.  We then had supper with Mom at home, and went to the ham club meeting.

Today I plan to get caught up on some desk jobs.  I started by reserving a flight home on the seventh.  As luck would have it, a 20% discount coupon appeared in my inbox and I used it.  The flight is still not as cheap as I would like, but it is a lot better than the last time I looked.

I'm guessing there should be runoff at home soon, judging by the weather forecast.

Bill and I covered more distance today, hiking overland and logging a geocache along the way.  It was an easy find.  We had no thought of geocaching when we set out, but I happened to notice that I had an app on my Tab called c.geo and tried it out.  It worked well.

This was our longest hike to date according to the app -- Cardio Trainer beta -- we use to track our walks.  We covered 2.7 miles over rocks, through snow and along roads.

I still have some more deskwork to do and planning for summer camps for the grandkids.  I also should take the van for a quick check of the brake work and to see if there are some hardened rubbers.  I am hearing a bit more noise from the suspension than I think I should.
