Friday January 12th, Saturday January 13th,
Sunday January 14th, & Monday January 15th,2001
The
convention started in earnest Friday with a wide variety of speakers.
Aaron was scheduled to speak about 'Bees in
Cyberspace', so we worked on his presentation which used my laptop computer to
show selected websites.
Saturday night, we went on a tour to Tijuana to
look around and do a bit of shopping
On Monday, I came down with a cold that had been
going around. It started with a sore throat and lowered my enthusiasm
level for several days.
We have been able to check in to BEE-L
regularly during the week, and I have written to Bee-L with some of what I found
to be highlights of the convention.
Tonight: Mainly cloudy with a few flurries. Wind northwest 30
km/h diminishing to light. Low minus 11.
Saturday: A mix of sun and cloud. High minus 3.
Sunday: Morning cloud otherwise mainly sunny. Low minus 13.
High minus 2.
Monday: Sunny. Low minus 9. High plus 4.

The convention is now over. We had thought
to make some contacts and visit local beekeepers during the balance of the stay,
but since I have been sick, I did not get anything set up. Although there
were some reports that the almonds were almost beginning, a trip to see them
means a 500 mile drive and we don't have a car.
We moved out of the Marriott, and over to a
cheaper accommodation at the Mission Valley Super 8. We bought 4 day
Trolley passes for $12 each, got onto the Trolley and before long found
ourselves at The Mexican border.
We
walked over the foot bridge into Tijuana and enjoyed the tacos, the people and
the beer -- and Aaron went nuts about the stained glass on sale in the markets
there.
I was still a bit weak and the weather was cool,
so we returned to our hotel early in the evening.
Today: Becoming mainly sunny. Wind increasing to
northwest 20 km/h. High minus 5.
Tonight: Mainly clear. Wind northwest 20. Low minus 11.

We
relocated to a more central motel in Little Italy, and then went down to Tijuana
again. I had made a friend of a street vendor who happened also to be a
beekeeper and he told us how to catch the cab to Rosarito. I had not been
there for 10 years, so we jumped into the back of a station wagon and of we went
to Las Playas de Rosarito.
We
arrived about mid-afternoon and headed to the beach. Just as I remembered
from years back, horses were available to rent on the beach. Aaron wasn't
interested, but for $3, I made a deal and went for a ride. The horse was
slow, but that was just fine by me. We wandered the beach until sundown, then
went up town.
We looked around, then got another cab back to
Tijuana and then caught the trolley back to our motel in San Diego.
Today: Snow mixed at times with rain ending this morning. A
mix of sun and cloud this afternoon. Wind northwesterly 20 gusting 40 km/h. High
plus 3.
